Waking up with jaw pain, morning headaches or more sensitive teeth? You may be clenching or grinding your teeth while you sleep. This is called bruxism, and a custom night guard is the simplest way to protect your teeth.
In this guide, we explain the types of night guards, which one is the most comfortable and how much a night guard costs in Medellín.

What is bruxism?
Bruxism is the habit of clenching or grinding your teeth, usually at night and without noticing. Over time it can wear down enamel, chip tooth edges, loosen fillings or veneers and tire your jaw muscles.
Signs you may need a night guard
- Jaw pain or tiredness when you wake up
- Morning headaches
- Worn, flat or chipped teeth
- Sensitivity to cold or heat
- Someone hears you grinding your teeth at night
- Fillings or veneers that come loose or crack
Other names for a night guard
You may also hear it called a bite guard, occlusal splint, Michigan splint or mouth guard for teeth grinding. They all refer to a guard you wear at night to protect your teeth and help your jaw relax.
Night guard types and prices at Poblado Dental
1. Dual Michigan night guard (extra comfort): COP 450,000
Our top recommendation. It has two layers, hard on the outside and soft on the inside, so it is the most comfortable to sleep in and offers the most protection. That is about US$143.
2. Intermediate night guard: COP 350,000
Good everyday protection at a mid-range price, about US$111.
3. Basic night guard: COP 250,000
The most affordable way to protect your teeth from wear, about US$79.
The consultation is COP 30,000 (about US$10) and is credited toward your treatment if you go ahead. Your dentist checks your bite and recommends the best option for you. USD amounts are estimates and may vary with the exchange rate.

Custom vs. store-bought night guards
Store-bought guards do not fit your mouth, can shift during the night and are often uncomfortable, so many people stop wearing them. A custom guard is made from impressions of your teeth, stays in place and is much more comfortable.
How to care for your night guard
- Rinse it with cool water and clean it with a soft brush after each use.
- Avoid hot water, which can warp it.
- Always keep it in its case.
- Bring it to your checkups so we can make sure it still fits well.
Frequently asked questions
Does a night guard cure bruxism?
A night guard protects your teeth and helps your jaw relax, but it does not remove the cause. If your grinding is related to stress or other factors, your dentist can guide you.
What if my teeth are already worn?
Protect them with a night guard first. Worn or chipped edges can be restored with tooth-colored fillings or veneers.
We have English-speaking dentists, or a translator available on request. In most cases, a translator is there to assist you during your visit.
